Humanitarian Unit, International Department, Church of Sweden
The Church of Sweden takes a holistic view on wellbeing, where emotional, social and spiritual needs are addressed alongside those that are physical and biological. The community based psychosocial support (CBPS) approach is founded on the belief in the resources and capacities of emergency-affected individuals and communities to deal with difficulties, illness and distress and to recover. The humanitarian work is well integrated into the Church of Sweden’s international work. Within the Humanitarian Programme, Church of Sweden strives to ensure that quality community based psychosocial support is implemented in sudden onset emergencies, strengthen implementing partners capacity in CBPS in protracted crises, and promote CBPS at global and regional levels through knowledge generation and advocacy.
The Church of Sweden's humanitarian assistance can be implemented through a financial grant, assignment of staff or deployments from the psychosocial roster and/or thematic support. The Church of Sweden works through, and together with partner organisations and does not implement efforts on its own. Deploying psychosocial experts from CoS psychosocial roster is a key method for the CoS to provide technical support on community based psychosocial approach to ACT partner organisations, and in this way contribute to CBPS becoming an integrated part of the humanitarian response of the ACT Alliance.
Deployments are most commonly initiated when CoS Humanitarian Unit or an ACT member organisation have identified a need for technical support in order to ensure quality CBPS implementation in a CoS funded ACT appeal. Deployments can also be part of institutional capacity building programs with selected ACT strategic partners. Roster members are sometimes also deployed to conduct trainings for the global ACT member community i e through global/regional trainings.
Members in the Psychosocial Roster are specialised experts, recruited to provide technical support and build capacity. They are not to substitute the work of the requesting ACT member organization.
The core of the strategy for the CoS Roster is the objective to develop and maintain a roster of highly skilled experts and specialists with relevant humanitarian profiles, and with availability with short notice; who can respond effectively, timely and efficiently.
For this purpose, Church of Sweden is now recruiting members to our Psychosocial Roster Core Group.
