Background

In the Swedish Red Cross (SRC) International Direction (2020-2023) integration of environmental and climate considerations under Disaster Risk Management is a key priority and a part of the development and operationalisation of SRC specific quality standards for and improved ways of working in SRC supported programmes in the field.

In 2022 SRC became a new partner to Sida Civsam and will from January start to implement a programme with two focus areas; community resilience focusing on community health, WASH and climate change adaptation; as well as capacity strengthening of partner national societies. As in line with SRC’s International Direction, environment and climate is an important part of this programme.

As Thematic Advisor Environment and Green Response, you are part of the International Department and report to the Head of Thematic Coordination Unit.

Your role

As Thematic Advisor Environment and Green Response, your primary task is to strengthen capacity amongst SRC and sister national society staff and to improve our ways of working with “greening” SRC supported programmes in the field. You also on contribute to developing environmental guidelines and standards for SRC, and our partner national societies, to uphold as part of its delivery of longer-term programming.

As SRC supported programmes are often implemented by local partners, an important task is to support National Societies or other movement partners in integrating the defined quality standards and ways of working in programmatic activities in the countries of operation. This work will be conducted in close cooperation with the Thematic Advisors WASH, DRR and Health on integration of environmental considerations (including climate change mitigation) in SRC programming. You will also be working closely with other Thematic Advisors as well as with the geographical desks, managers and staff in the field.

Your role is to help upskill SRC and our partner national societies to understand, assess and respond to environmental risks and considerations within field programming. Experience in working with Sida’s Green Toolbox as well as other environmental assessment tools are assets. The selected candidate is required to complete simplified environmental assessments from a distance, guiding field staff to gather needed inputs and working alongside field based colleagues to identify risk mitigation opportunities. In addition, you will in collaboration with SRC country teams and NS design and support the implementation of activities that possibility contribute to environmental and climate sustainability…

Tools development, documentation and sharing of learnings are significant aspects of the work. Experience with creation and implementation of monitoring tools for environmental impact is required.

Your role includes following the developments within your thematic area of expertise and to function as a resource within the organisation as well as acting as a spokesperson for SRC, sharing experiences and best practices primarily within the RCRC movement, but also to external parties, in relation to integration of environmental considerations in humanitarian action and longer-term development.

Networking and maintaining a dialogue with strategic actors within the thematic area are also important parts of your role. You will represent SRC in sharing of experiences and best practices in global initiatives related to integration of environmental considerations in humanitarian action within the RCRC Movement. When relevant you will be expected to propose SRC positioning within the area of integration of environmental considerations in humanitarian action and to develop advocacy messages to support it.

Resource mobilization including proposal writing and program development is also included in your role.

Required qualifications

  • Relevant academic degree within environmental science, engineering (with focus on water and sanitation), disaster risk management, climate change adaptation, or equivalent professional experience of at least 5-7 years
  • Professional experience of 1-3 years of integrating environmental considerations (including climate change), especially DRR (disaster risk reduction) and/or health programming
  • Professional experience of 1-3 years of integrated multi-sectorial programming within an international humanitarian/development context
  • Knowledge and experience of the international humanitarian/development system, preferably from RCRC movement
  • Strong experience in capacity building and facilitation skills
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Excellent command of English as a working language
  • Swedish work permit

Meriting qualifications

  • Experience in supporting and designing long-term development programming
  • Experience from applied understanding and application of community resilience building approaches and working with community driven processes
  • Experience in developing learning or capacity building frameworks
  • Expertise in development of monitoring and evaluation tools
  • Command of French or Arabic
  • Security training (HEAT or similar)

Personal skills/competencies

  • Experience of working in an advisory capacity
  • Team player constructively coordinating with peers
  • Experience in capacity strengthening of low resource organizations
  • Strong analytical abilities
  • Self-motivated with ability to take initiative and assume responsibility
  • Capacity and willingness to promote innovative approaches

This is a full-time temporary position of 12 months, with possible extension. Duty station is at the Swedish Red Cross Headquarters in Stockholm, where we operate from an activity-based environment. Starting date asap!

The work involves traveling to internationally, sometimes to complex and potentially dangerous areas of disaster and conflict. Due to Covid-19 the extent of travel is hard to estimate at this point.

In selecting candidates, the Swedish Red Cross use a competency-based model and all candidates will be assessed on the above requirements. Your personality and performance contribute to the creation of effective working modalities internationally. You share the values of the Red Cross.
